Just One Star ‘Challenge’

As many of you probably already know the shop is expecting huge shipments of fabric this month, from the American Quilts of Valor Collection.  Nine companies have created patriotic fabric, and we of course had to have it all! Part of the proceeds from the sale of this fabric benefits the Quilts of Valor Foundation, and we also hope will inspire the making of more Quilts of Valor.  For much more information about the Quilts of Valor Foundation check out their website at    http://www.qovf.org/

Moda fabrics, one of our personal favorite companies, along with Minick and Simpson have gone even farther to ensure more quilts are made and donated to servicemen and women.  They are asking us to each make “just one star” and send it to Moda, where they will put them together to make 100 quilts!

Here is the quilt that Minick and Simpson designed for the American Valor Fabric Collection.  It uses their new fabrics also.  Some of you may recognize this quilt, it is a simpler version of a quilt they had in a magazine awhile back.

Here are the details from Moda’s blog.

The challenge is to piece, quilt and bind 100 quilts in 100 days using the
Flag of Valor pattern by Minick and Simpson.
The deadline for star blocks
is May 1, 2011 so that we can meet our quilt deadline
by Flag Day, June 14, 2011.
As the saying goes – “many hands make light work”.
We need 1800 star blocks to reach our goal.
Please take a few minutes to piece Just One Star block (click here for block pattern) using a medium red or blue and a cream background. Better yet, invite your small group or even your entire guild to make Just One Star block. Sign each block with your name and state.
Then we can truly say….the hands of a grateful nation comfort our soldiers!
We will coordinate the  donation of the 100 quilts thru the Semper Fi Fund, a cause that is near and dear to designers, Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson.
Thank you for your help!
Send untrimmed blocks to:
United Notions/Moda Fabrics

Guess what I did today?  Just one star (OK, you know me, I actually made two…)  Probably took less then 30 minutes to make the first one.
Here is my challenge to you, I’d like everyone to make “just one star”!  The directions are above, the fabric requirements are very small!  But, what a great feeling to have made a contribution!
So, Kathie R. get all the girls at Friday Bee to make one!  That means you Pat and Lisa and Irene and all.
Connie, get all the employees, Mana and Bobbi and Carol Ann and Sue and Karen and MaryRuth and Bonnie and Carol and all.
Jacque, don’t think I’m letting you off the hook!  Just one star!
Holly, this means you too!
I challenge everyone reading this blog to make a star and send it to Moda!  When you have sent your block leave a comment on the blog (any date between now and April 30) and I will have a drawing or two for some prizes!  Now, get busy!
Later, Sandra
